Its main characteristic are sugarcane crops, tropical fruits such as pineapple and a wide variety of ornamental plants.
Jujan, Milagro, Simón Bolívar, Naranjito, Marcelino Maridueña and Bucay make up the Ruta del Azúcar. They have extensive sugarcane plantations, whose harvesting activity takes place in the second half of the year.
In this sweet route you can visit, for example in Bucay, the sugar mills and see the handcrafted production of sugarcane and its transformation into brandy, panela and candies among others. Also the industrialization of sugarcane to be converted into sugar and its derivatives in sugar mills such as Milagro or Marcelino Maridueña.
Gastronomy along the whole route offers a variety of typical dishes but the canton Jujan is a must for those who like to delight their palate with the exquisite fried foods.
On the road to the cantons of Simón Bolívar and Marcelino Maridueña you can walk through natural tunnels formed by leafy and colorful trees.
The Milagro-Naranjito road is known as the ‘Ruta de los Viveros’. Not only you can appreciate variety of ornamental plants but can purchase them in a diversity of plant nurseries that exist on the sides of the road, along about 8 kms.
